Higher Learning podcast
Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay, according their own description, delves into topics including Black culture, politics, sports, and current events. They have introduced me to people and ideas I don't get anywhere else.
Here's an interview with Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz on the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X book
Malcolm X, tells the story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement to veteran writer and journalist Alex Haley. Haley worked with Malcolm X for nearly two years; all the while, Malcolm did “not expect to live long enough to read this book in its finished form.” He was correct. I was ten when the book was published. I was never assigned it in school, college, or graduate school. I should have been taught it, and retaught it. I should have memorized portions the way I have Shakespeare.
Do the Right Thing film
There are no sufficient words. If you haven't watched it, watch it. If you have, watch it again. For context at the time of release, Roger Ebert's review. Director Spike Lee on the review.
The 1619 Project -- historiography and curriculum
I've been to Plymoth Rock. I can still recite from memory: The Concord Hymn and the Midnight ride of Paul Revere. One morning, my children and I raised the flag over Fort McHenry. I didn't learn this.
Mia Mottley Prime Minister of Barbados — politics "One hand cannot clap."
